Hospital Bag Checklist: OB‑GYN Approved Essentials for Birth

Packing your hospital bag for labor and delivery should feel exciting — not stressful.
Over the years, I’ve seen parents bring everything but the kitchen sink… and others show up with almost nothing. Here’s my OB‑GYN approved hospital bag checklist so you can focus on your birth, not what you forgot at home.z
This list is based on what you’ll actually use — plus a few personal touches to make your hospital stay more comfortable.
Giving birth is one of the most important moments of your life, you should make the experience how you want it to be.
When to Pack Your Hospital Bag
I recommend packing your bag between 34–36 weeks of pregnancy.
That way, if baby decides to make an early appearance, you’ll be ready without scrambling.
Essentials for Mom
Clothing & Comfort
-
Cozy robe or cardigan – Something soft to keep you warm.
-
Loose, comfortable clothes – Think nursing-friendly tops and stretchy bottoms.
-
Socks & slippers – Hospitals can be chilly.
-
Going‑home outfit – Loose, easy to wear.
Personal Care
-
Your own toiletries – Shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste.
-
Lip balm & lotion – Hospital air is dry.
-
Hair ties or headband – Keep hair out of your face during labor.
Create Your Own Birth Environment
The hospital might not feel homey, but you can make your space feel calmer and more personal:

Essential oil diffuser – Lavender or peppermint can help you relax.
-
Your own pillow or blanket – Familiar textures = instant comfort.

Labor can be long — and hospital food isn’t always available when you want it.
-
Granola bars, crackers, dried fruit – For after birth or approved snacking.
-
Electrolyte drinks or coconut water – Hydration is key.
-
Snacks for your support person – They’ll need energy, too.

Pro Tips from Dr. Chun
-
Pack light but meaningful. You don’t need five outfits, but you’ll be glad you brought your favorite pillow.
-
Personal touches matter. Your environment impacts how you feel during labor.
-
Think comfort and function. If it doesn’t serve a purpose or make you more comfortable, leave it home.
