Symptoms That Deserve More Attention
Pregnancy involves a constant stream of new sensations, and most of them are completely normal. But some symptoms during pregnancy signal something that needs prompt evaluation — and they're often the ones patients dismiss, wait on, or rationalize away.
Here are five worth knowing.

1. Swelling in the Face or Hands (Especially Sudden)
Ankle swelling late in pregnancy is common. Sudden swelling in the face or hands is different... it can be an early sign of preeclampsia, a condition that requires prompt evaluation. If you wake up with a noticeably puffier face or your rings suddenly don't fit, call your provider.

2. A Persistent Headache That Doesn't Respond to Hydration
Headaches in pregnancy are common. A headache that lasts more than a few hours, doesn't improve with water and rest, and comes with visual changes or upper abdominal pain is not typical. This combination warrants same-day evaluation.

3. Vaginal Bleeding at Any Stage
Light spotting in early pregnancy can be normal. Any bleeding that is heavier than spotting, or any bleeding after 20 weeks, should be evaluated. Don't assume it's fine because it's not painful.

4. Burning or Pain with Urination
UTIs are more common in pregnancy and can progress to kidney infections quickly. They're also associated with preterm labor risk. A UTI that feels mild is still worth a call — it won't resolve on its own.

5. A Gut Feeling That Something Is Off
This one doesn't fit neatly into a clinical category, but it matters. Patients who report a persistent sense that something isn't right — without a specific, nameable symptom — are often right. That instinct is worth a phone call every time.
